The CBC has shared its viewership and mobile app usage statistics during the February 1st-3rd U.S. tariff crisis. During this time, the U.S. imposed 25 percent tariffs on Canadian goods, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau retaliated with tariffs on goods from the U.S.
Canadian citizens have responded mainly by only buying Canadian goods, and most grocers and retail stores have also done their part by labelling which products were made or produced north of the border. U.S. President Donald Trump has since paused tariffs for 30 days following a conversation with Trudeau.
According to the CBC, 4.5 million Canadians tuned in to CBC during those three days, making it the most-watched Canadian-based news network.
CBC also said 4 million unique visitors turned to CBCNews.ca and the CBC News app on February 3rd alone. This is the highest number of people to tune into the app since the coverage of the Rogers network outage on July 8th, 2022. CBC also announced that February 1st was the highest single day for mobile CBC News and app hours since the convoy protests in Ottawa on February 19th, 2022.
The network also released that average daily views on the CBC News app between February 1st-3rd were up 120 percent from the daily average in January. The app also saw an increase of 32 percent between February 1st and 3rd compared to January.
On February 3rd, CBC’s flagship program, The National, attracted 2 million viewers, marking the second-highest viewership this year following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation on January 6.
