Staff members in the Prime Minister’s office and the Privy Council were unable to work on January 31st, as a fibre issue left them without working computers.
A spokesperson for the government says that there was no evidence of sabotage. Either way, affected workers claimed that they couldn’t complete basic tasks like sending emails or even printing, according to a Bloomberg report. The network was back up and running within 24 hours.
The landline phones in the building were still operational, but most workers needed to rely on their mobile phones to hotspot get their work done throughout the day leading up to the Trump tariffs.
The report goes on to express how workers were frustrated with how long the outage lasted and how the government was unable to fix a broken fibre cable in less than 24 hours. That said, I expect this cable was likely run through the ceiling and was a custom length, so it probably took some time to isolate the incident, cut a new cable and then re-run it.
