After a one-month delay, Canada and the U.S. are officially in a trade war. The U.S. has imposed 25 per cent tariffs on all goods coming into the U.S. from Canada, and of course, Canada is fighting back with $30 billion worth of tariffs on American goods.
The Canadian government has published a list of products from the U.S. subject to 25 per cent tariffs, including vacuum cleaners, laundry machines, and video game consoles. However, a close look at this published list shows that smartphones, computers, laptops, smart home products, cameras, tablets, and most other consumer electronics are not included in the 25 per cent tariffs.
This means many products from Google, Apple, Nvidia, HP, Intel, Amazon, Dell, Meta, and more should not have increased prices. So, if the prices of the iPhone 17 series, Pixel 10 series, the latest Surface devices, and others have increased this year, it’s not due to the trade war.
At least not yet. The trade war is volatile, and who knows what might happen tomorrow.

Still, if you don’t want to buy U.S. devices, Samsung sells excellent smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Companies like Asus, Acer, Lenovo and more sell laptops and desktops. Unfortunately, Canada doesn’t sell very many consumer electronics, but there are definitely non-U.S. options.
