A few new Nintendo Switch 2 specs and features have seemingly been revealed thanks to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
As spotted by The Verge, new FCC filings provide some information on a console-handheld hybrid device from Nintendo that almost certainly is the Switch 2. First, the filings state that the Switch 2 will sport Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) networks with up to 80MHz of bandwidth. While it’s not the latest Wi-Fi 7 or Wi-Fi 6E standards, it is up from the Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) on the original Switch, indicating we’ll get faster Wi-Fi with the new system.
On top of that, the filings reveal NFC functionality for the Switch 2, which will be located in the right Joy-Con, just as it is with the current Switch. Presumably, this would indicate support for the Amiibo NFC figures, which Nintendo introduced in 2014 in the Wii U era. Several Switch games allow you to tap the Joy-Con with Amiibo figures to receive special in-game goodies, so presumably, the Switch 2 will retain — or, perhaps, even expand upon — this feature.
And finally, the FCC filings show that the device can be charged with both the bottom and new top USB-C ports. The latter was teased in Nintendo’s brief video showing the design of the Switch 2, but this filing seemingly confirms it.
All told, none of this is major information, but it’s at least something for fans as they eagerly await more official information from Nintendo itself. The Japanese gaming giant has confirmed that it will host an April 2 Nintendo Direct presentation focused entirely on the Switch 2. Presumably, we’ll get a breakdown of all the specs during that event, as well as a specific release date beyond the general confirmed “2025” window.
