You’re not alone if your X (Twitter) wasn’t working earlier. The company’s CEO, Elon Musk, posted on the service to explain why it went down.
According to him, the company is facing a cyberattack, which he later pinned on Ukraine in an interview with Fox News.
Users started experiencing problems this morning around 5:30 a.m. EST. It cleared up after a while, but then there was another outage, followed by a third. I’m still having some problems with the app, and while I can see tweets, I can’t share them.
Trump and Musk have made enemies among many people, so potentially being targeted by cyberattacks wouldn’t be surprising. Musk didn’t clarify whether the alleged cyberattack was used to gain users’ personal data or just to shut down the social media site.
That said, it should also be noted that there have been numerous technical issues with X/Twitter since Musk acquired the platform and laid off around 80 percent of its staff. Last year, he was also accused of lying about an alleged DDOS attack, which he claimed the Democrats — who opposed his preferred presidential candidate, Donald Trump — had orchestrated. Given Musk’s noted disdain for Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, it’s also easy to see how he could be spinning this latest outage as a way to smear another political opponent.
Musk, the CEO of Tesla, is a close friend of Trump and is the head of the White House Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which has recently laid off many government employees and has shut down federal programs. Trump and Musk have also ignited trade wars with Canada and Mexico and have threatened Ukraine.
