Sometimes, the internet can be used for good. People have been giving very popular memes a Studio Ghibli makeover, and I love it. It’s combining two of my favourite things: anime and memes.
It’s now all over X (formerly Twitter) and seems to have started with Kaz Bycko, lover of Bitcoin and CEO and co-founder of Bubbl.fm, an AI podcasting platform.
So you’re telling me I can take a popular meme, transform it into Studio Ghibli style anime, and people will just like it? pic.twitter.com/2n3ulLOXVB

At the time of writing, the tweet has more than 7.3 million views and 181K likes and counting. Kaz says he’s using ChatGPT do make these memes. Unfortunately, you can’t do this on the free version and can only use the paid one. Images in ChatGPT for free users have been delayed, as ChatGPT didn’t expect so many people to be making images on the platform. “Images in ChatGPT are wayyyy more popular than we expected,” said CEO Sam Atlman.
It’s pretty easy to do: log on to ChatGPT 4o, upload the selected meme, and write “Studio Ghibliify this meme” in the textbox. After a few minutes, it’ll try to generate a Studio Ghibli-inspired version of the meme. I’ve played around with it, and it does not always get it right on the first shot. But telling it to try again typically gets the job done. OpenAI told The Verge the error happens due to the content policy and that there’s a rigid safe wall to prevent misuse or deepfakes.
For some reason, I’m unable to do it at all mobile, but your mileage may vary.
