Microsoft expanding Copilot Plus AI features to Intel, AMD PCs

You'll need a device with new, AI-capable AMD or Intel chips

Last year when Microsoft announced the Copilot Plus Windows laptops with tons of new features powered by artificial intelligence (AI), many were disappointed to find out the features would be limited to devices with Snapdragon chips. Now, that’s starting to change.

Windows 11 Copilot Plus AI features are expanding from Snapdragon X to devices with select AMD and Intel chips, like the Ryzen AI 300 and Core Ultra 200V series. Microsoft detailed the expansion in a new blog post.

Per Tom’s Hardware, Microsoft started rolling out AI features on Monday, including Live Captions, Cocreator, Restyle Image, and Image Creator.

Live Captions are probably one of the best features coming expanding other more devices. It offers real-time translations from 40 languages to English for audio and video content. Microsoft says it works for virtual meetings as well as content like podcasts and video playback. The company said this is coming soon to modern AMD and Intel chips.

Microsoft Cocreator

Cocreator is also neat, though I’m not convinced it’s all that useful. Cocreator works in Microsoft Paint and blends generative AI with human input to create images. Users can enter a prompt and then make a sketch in Paint to guide the AI’s image generation. I tested Cocreator at launch and was impressed by how well it worked with my terrible sketches, but outside of that initial test I’ve never needed (or wanted) to use it again.

Other new features expanding to AMD and Intel chips include Voice Access, which Microsoft characterizes as an accessibility feature. It facilitates more flexible language interaction with Windows.

The Photos app will also get some AI upgrades on AMD and Intel with Restyle Image and Image Creator. The former is an AI-powered filter that can change the look of an image, while the later is, well, just what it says — a way to create images.

Microsoft said those with a supported PC will need to get the March 2025 Windows non-security preview update to get these features right away. To get that, you’ll need to have the November 2024 non-security preview update installed. To install these, head to Settings > Windows Update and turn on the ‘Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available’ option.

However, if you don’t want to bother with all that (and frankly, I don’t blame you), you can wait as Microsoft slowly rolls out the features over the next month.
