National Canadian Film Day returns on Wednesday, April 16, bringing with it all sorts of programming to celebrate Canadian cinema.
This year, the event — which has been held annually since 2014 — will feature more than 1,800 free screenings across Canada and other countries. Other events, like a Toronto town hall about supporting domestic films featuring Canadians like Yannick Bisson and Don McKellar, will also be held. Altogether, more than 100,000 people are expected to attend these miscellaneous events.
A full list of the screenings and other events can be found on the official National Canadian Film Day website, but some highlights include:
- Can I Get a Witness? — 2025 drama film starring Canadians Keira Jang, Joel Oulette, and Sandra Oh (various cities)
- Elbows Up for Canadian Culture — panel featuring Canadians Yannick Bisson, Don McKellar, Mary Walsh, and Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers (Toronto)
- It Feeds (Canadian premiere in Toronto) — new horror movie starring Canada’s Shawn Ashmore (sold out, waitlist in effect)
- Young Werther — 2025 romantic-comedy starring Canada’s Alison Pill (Vancouver)
- Universal Language — Canada’s official 2025 Oscars selection for International Film (various cities)
If you can’t make it out to a theatre on April 16, National Canadian Film Day also has some handy resources for how to watch Canadian movies at home on TV and streaming platforms, as well as titles that are currently playing in theatres.
