Running has become one of the fastest growing sports in the world, and now two of the largest services for runners everywhere have joined forces. Strava, the largest app for the running community, has acquired the marathon training app Runna.
Strava, founded in 2009, is one of the leading fitness and running applications in the global running boom. Users can track their runs within the app and share them with other Strava users. According to Strava’s website, they have 180 million users across 150 countries, including Canada.
Runna, which started in 2021 and released in 2022, is a subscription based app which isn’t so tailored towards a global running community, but rather tailoring to marathon planning and training. According to Strava’s press release, Runna “helped millions of runners complete their first race.” Runna was a finalist for Apple’s iPhone App of the Year in 2024.
With this purchase, Strava fills in the one glaring hole in its product: no formal training. Strava had some document-based plans that subscribers could use, but according to CEO Michael Martin, “Those were used very, very infrequently.” Strava also stated in its press release that 43 per cent of all Strava users wanted to conquer a big race or event in 2025, which Runna can now assist with.
Meanwhile, Runna gets access to one of the largest running communities on the planet to boost its service. According to both press releases, the companies will operate independently, with some integrations set to be released in the future.
According to founders Dom Maskell and Ben Parker, the two companies have been in talks since last year. No price details have been released or leaked. According to Runna, the deal is expected to close within the coming months.
