Google is in court in the U.S. to prove that it isn’t an illegal monopoly in digital ad sales, but if it loses, it might have to sell off Chrome, and there are a lot of big tech buyers dying to take it over.
OpenAI’s head of product for ChatGPT, Nick Turley, testified in the case and mentioned that his company, and many others, would be interested in buying Chrome.
Turley also took some time to spin a bit of a sales pitch for why OpenAI should be the one to buy Chrome, explaining how a native AI-first browsing experience would be more useful to users than existing AI plugins for Chrome.
At the end of all this, it still remains to be seen if Google will be forced to sell Chrome. There are three major demands from prior court cases, which include Google sharing its data with competitors for their search engines, notifying the government when buying AI startups, and finally, selling Chrome.
To me, the first demand doesn’t make much sense if Google needs to sell off Chrome anyway, so I suspect the company will try to narrow the scope of its federal requirements to avoid losing the browser. Chrome is already extremely popular, and even if Google needs to give up its data, it will still be the majority player in the browser space.
