OpenAI is allowing free ChatGPT users limited access to the Deep Research tool without needing to pay for it. The company will also expand the tool’s limits for all users through a lightweight version powered by its o4-mini model.
According to the company’s official X account, subscribers to the Plus, Team, and Pro plans will get expanded usage through the new 04-powered lightweight Deep Research feature. The company states that the model is apparently “nearly as intelligent” as the current Deep Research model, and is much more cost-efficient for OpenAI. Responses will be shorter but maintain the same depth and quality as before.
The tool was previously released for paid OpenAI users across the Plus, Team, Pro, Edu, and Enterprise tiers. It was “fine-tuned” on the 03 model.
However, depending on the tier, the tool was limited to just a few queries per month.
Plus users have access to 10 queries per month, while users in the Pro tier are limited to 125. Once people use the monthly queries, ChatGPT will switch to the new lightweight version. Plus and Team members will get an extra 15 research queries, while Pro users will get an additional 125 queries powered by the new lightweight model. Enterprise and Edu will get access to the model next week, and will get 15 more queries per month.
Free users will only have access to the new research tool powered by the o4-mini model and will receive only five answers monthly.
Open AI has started to give free users access to more features, but the company initially delayed the launch of the new image generation software for non-paying users “for a while.” The feature has since been made available.
