Smartphone retailer and repair shop Mobile Klink wants to make buying certified pre-owned (CPO) devices more attractive with a new lifetime warranty program. Except, it’s not exactly lifetime.
As of May 1, 2025, Telus-owned Mobile Klinik will include a limited lifetime warranty for any CPO phone purchased from the retailer and activated with Telus or Koodo. However, the warranty is “contingent on the device remaining repairable and actively used on the TELUS or Koodo network,” according to an email Telus sent to MobileSyrup.
Mobile Klinik’s website notes that the warranty ends one year after the purchase date for customers who don’t activate with Telus or Koodo.
Moreover, the warranty doesn’t cover loss, theft, or “damage beyond economic repair.” Mobile Klinik says if a device can’t be repaired or if parts aren’t available, it may “offer the current trade-in value of your CPO Device or a $50 trade-in credit towards your next purchase, whichever amount is greater.” This means it should cover things like battery replacements, but not scratched screens.
Update May 1, 2025, at 2:59 p.m. ET: Telus further clarified to MobileSyrup that the warranty would cover battery issues caused by a manufacturer defect, but not battery degradation caused by regular use.
Despite the fine print, I’d still say this warranty offer is a pretty decent deal. A free warranty on a used smartphone is compelling and should make buying pre-owned devices more compelling, especially since it addresses one of the biggest concerns with buying used. Couple that with the savings compared to buying a new phone, and this is pretty solid overall.
Assuming you are already with Telus or Koodo, or were planning to switch to them, this could be an affordable way to get a new(ish) phone for less.
You can learn more about the offer on Mobile Klinik’s website.
