The Peel Region Police, which cover Brampton and Missasuga in Ontario, announced that it customized a Chevrolet Blazer EV to be a police cruiser. This is the second EV used by the force after it brought on a Mustang Mach-E in 2022.
The press release says that a typical officer drives around 100km per shift, so the 400km range of the Blazer EV is more than enough for a typical police work day. The vehicle is being used as a test to see if it will work for daily patrols in all seasons. There’s a new police station being built in Brampton that’s set to finish in 2027, and if the pilot project goes well it will be outfitted with enough EV chargers to power a fleet.

Since 2020, the police services have been using hybrid vehicles and is already using three EVs, but not for daily patrols. This new test will put a lot more miles on the Blazer than the aforementioned Mach-E.
While this one car is unlikely to make much of a difference environmentally, if the police service is able to transition to mainly EVs, it could reduce its carbon footprint substantially.
The RCMP has also been testing EVs, but mentions that the range on the Teslas it used wasn’t quite enough in some areas. “I do think that there are a lot of locations where we can fit these vehicles into operations and they will do quite well. However, when you head out into the Prairies and … the northern part of Canada … we cover a lot of ground and our detachment area is quite large,” said Sgt. Shaun Vickery, who works in the RCMP’s national traffic programs and operational technologies unit, in a CBC News report.
