Subaru skirting tariffs by sourcing more vehicles from Japan

The automaker also plans to meet with dealers to minimize potential price increases

To avoid spiking its prices with tariffs from the U.S. trade war, Subaru Canada is going to increase the number of vehicles it gets from Japan and decrease its U.S. shipments. However, in a letter, the CEO of Subaru Canada did mention that some dealerships might still see price changes.

Unlike Toyota and Honda, Subaru doesn’t do any manufacturing in Canada. Last year, 26 per cent of Subaru Canada’s sales were of vehicles made in the U.S. The company aims to reduce that to around 10 percent if it can.

Canada has free trade deals with Japan, so it’s now cheaper to bring cars all the way across the world than to ship them up from America. According to Driving.ca, the top-selling Subaru is the Crosstrek, and already, the vast majority of the 28,000 sold in Canada last year came from Japan. The Outback and Ascent also have some models made in the company’s U.S. plant.

That being said, the Outback is on track to move its full production to Japan for the 2026 model year. That decision was made before the recent tariff struggles, so there could be some changes behind the scenes with the new announcements today.

Finally, the automaker mentioned that it plans to study the tariffs and meet with its dealers to minimize any potential price increases.
