Google is reportedly making some big changes for Android 16, and of course, Mishaal Rahman has the exclusive. The company will reveal a new version of the Material Design theme at Google I/O next month, but these changes won’t be available in time for the launch of Android 16.
Rahman found these design changes in Android 16 Beta 4, and it’s unclear when it will launch. However, we may learn more during The Android Show or Google I/O.

According to Rahman, the status bar will have slight differences, such as segmented Wi-Fi and mobile data icons and bolder 5G and airplane mode icons. The Quick Settings and notification panel will also be combined. You’ll also get a new tile editor and one-click shortcuts for removing and adding titles. Additionally, there’s a blurred effect beneath the Quick Settings.
When the device is in light mode, it shows a frosted glass look; in dark mode, it shifts to a darker gray. There’s also a compact notification shelf that collapses notifications on the lock screen. Instead of a notification preview, the app’s icon appears in a small and slightly transparent form, so it doesn’t block the wallpaper. Tapping the icon reveals the pending notifications.
The PIN entry page also has a blurred background; the volume UI has changed and is less rounded. There are also new icon shapes, such as an ‘x’ ass well as an arch-like icon shape.
