If you want to buy a new console or a gaming GPU for your computer, you’ll likely put out more money than expected.
A new report from a Taiwan-based tech news outlet claims that GPU maker Nvidia is facing “multiple crises,” which include a $7.6 billion hit to its earnings due to export restrictions on AI GPUs and tariffs.
The report says CEO Jensen Huang has been travelling between the U.S. and China to find ways to reduce the impact of tariffs on Nvidia’s key exports. One way to combat this is to raise prices on all its products, including partner products from companies like Asus, Gigabyte, and MSI.
That will mean more expensive GPUs for consumers. Couple that with the increasing costs of gaming consoles and games themselves, gamers will find their wallets strained even more.
Worse, GPUs continue to face the risk of scalpers buying up the products and reselling them for even higher market prices. We’ve seen much of this since the pandemic, and the tariffs seem to make things worse.
The report also mentions that the price increase might take into consideration how much more expensive it is to make GPUs in the new TSMC plant in the U.S., as opposed to Taiwan.
If the majority of the increases are related to the tariffs, there is a precedent for the prices to decrease if the tariffs go away. However, it seems that as AI relies on more and more compute power, GPUs will become more desirable and expensive over time.
Xbox just raised the price of all of its consoles and accessories, Nintendo Switch 2 accessories got more expensive in the U.S. (and maybe Canada), and recently, there have been reports that PlayStation is considering doing the same thing.
