Update July 31, 2025 at 10:36a.m. ET: Rogers has now pushed back the 3G shutdown until August 7, 2025. Read our full story to learn more.
Rogers updated a support page about the July 31 3G network shutdown, detailing a new fee it will charge customers still using the 3G network.
While we were aware of the $3/month fee for select customers to keep using 2G and 3G services, a new one-time $75 fee now applies to people using the 3G network (or earlier) for a full billing cycle.
According to Rogers’ website, several notices have been sent to people who might be billed. However, the first round of bills will appear for people still using 3G exclusively on June 30, 2025. The company says this will help “cover the costs of our 3G transition efforts.”
Beyond the fees, if you continue to use 3G after June 30, you won’t be able to text or receive calls. If you try to make a call, you’ll be automatically routed to a Rogers agent who will explain the 3G shutdown and your upgrade options. You will still be able to call 911.
For most regular people, we’d recommend upgrading to a phone that supports 4G/5G, since that should be anything from the last 10 years or so. However, if you have a special use case for the old networks for you or your business, you can find more information about it on the Rogers help page.
However, it’s worth noting that some customers have devices that support newer networks but aren’t able to use them for various reasons. For example, many Canadians with OnePlus devices are waiting on a software update to enable VoLTE compatibility ahead of Rogers’ 3G shutdown in July.
Update 2/06/2025 4:18: If you are a Rogers customer, you can upgrade to a 5G network for free. If you check your MyRogers account, you should have an option for a $0 phone upgrade as well.
