A look at Canada’s mobile networks before Montreal’s F1 weekend

Montreal will host the Canadian Grand Prix on June 15, and many spectators will be opening their phones to capture the event on social media. With that in mind, OpenSignal has examined some of Canada’s major networks and which performs the best.

Currently, Rogers ranks first in experience. According to OpenSignal, Rogers is on top with an overall score of 84.0 per cent, with Videotron behind it at 83.1 per cent. Overall, there is about a per cent difference between the listed companies (Rogers, Videotron, Telus, Bell.)

In terms of reliability, Videotron barely tops Rogers with 942 points on OpenSignal’s scale, compared to 936. Bell and Telus are close together at 912 and 911 points. However, Telus (68.7/100) is ranked at the top alongside Rogers and Videotron for live video experience, with only a few fractions separating the group. Bell is far behind, currently sitting at 39.2/100.

One thing to note with reliability is that most networks have been impacted by outages in recent months, including one that greatly affected Bell.

The same three are also at the top regarding video experience, with Telus sitting above Videotron and Rogers with a point difference. Videotron and Rogers are only .01 points different, so the experience is pretty much the same. Bell is in last again, but it sits at 68.4, much better than its score for live video.

Telus also tops the competition regarding download speed experience, 5G availability, and 5G video experience. According to OpenSignal’s survey, Telus customers in Montreal have gotten 116.4 mb/s of download speed, 32.5 per cent 5G availability, and 78.6 points in 5G video experience. Bell is not far behind Telus regarding download speed and 5G availability, and takes the top spot in terms of 5G video experience. Rogers and Videotron were also not far behind and only a few points off the top in most categories.
