After a bombshell New York Times report proved that the company building a spa at Ontario Place substantially misrepresented itself to win the government contract. The original spa plans are still going through and now a selection of billboards placed around the site appear to be poorly AI-generated.
Spotted by journalist Colin D’Mello a picture can be seen depicting what the future park might look like. However, once you get closer it appears that there’s something a little off about all the people in the frame. This is the most obvious example, but it calls into question the authenticity of the rest of the renders.
One caveat I will make is that it’s hard to see these imperfections on a computer screen D’Mello saw a large billboard and up close it appears that the images don’t hold up when enlarged that much.
We’ve all seen architecture renders stray from the final designs before, but there’s something about the use of AI that makes it feel even more inauthentic. Maybe these drawings were done by an artist and they simply used AI to populate them with people? Or perhaps everything is AI and it was designed by someone with no experience and it will look nothing like the final design? When something is fabricated with generative AI it calls these things into question.
If you want to look at the rest of the images and read the Ontario Government’s pitch for the park you can find it all on the new design website.
