A downed cell tower has left an Alberta community without service for weeks

A small Alberta county has been out of phone service for weeks due to a downed cell tower.

As reported by CBC News, a 106-metre Telus cell tower in the municipal district of Thorhild was taken down by thieves who stole its copper wiring. The RCMP notes that it received a call about the downed tower on June 14.

It’s unclear exactly how many people have been impacted. Thorhild, which is located about 85km northeast of Edmonton, has a population of about 3,000. Telus confirmed to CBC News that some customers have experienced disrupted wireless services, but didn’t provide an exact number.

Unfortunately, the carrier says construction on a new cell tower isn’t expected to be completed until September. In the meantime, it says it’s adjusted nearby antennas “to provide as much coverage as possible to the community,” although it notes that some customers will have “intermittent or no service.”
