TikTok has started to roll out its new footnotes feature, which was initially announced in April 2025.
The new footnotes feature is TikTok’s spin on the community notes feature present in other platforms like X (Twitter) and Facebook.
Since the feature’s original announcement in April, around 80,000 users have been approved to be contributors. These contributors can add notes to videos that may include false claims, AI-generated content, or any videos that are missing context. These notes can be used to clear up any misconceptions or disinformation and provide context for videos. Before footnotes are displayed to the general user base, they must be cited to a real source while reaching a broad consensus level among many contributors.
TikTok adds that all notes are expected to follow the platform’s content moderation standards and that any notes that may violate these standards can also be reported.
At the time of writing, TikTok has not stated any plans to roll out this feature outside of the U.S., stating that the U.S. content ecosystem and size are sufficient to support this test. Any decisions to expand this feature outside of the U.S. will be made after TikTok analyzes the performance of the U.S. pilot.
