Apple has now shipped a total of three billion iPhones

In a call for the company’s third quarter earnings, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the company has shipped its three billionth iPhone since its launch in 2007.

In this call, Cook announced that Apple had set a June quarter revenue record of US$94 billion (roughly C$129.6 billion), up by 10 per cent compared to last year. Additionally, it saw a growth worldwide in most markets, setting June quarter revenue records in more than two dozen countries, such as Canada, the U.S., and Western Europe, among many others.

Cook also stated that Apple set a new quarterly record for the iPhone, which grew by a substantial 13 per cent compared to last year, with growth in every geographic segment, and double-digit growth in developing markets like India and the Middle East.

Cook elaborated that iPhones made US$44.6 billion (about C$61.5 billion) in revenue this quarter while setting a June quarter record for upgraders, up double digits, with the iPhone 16 lineup compared to the iPhone 15. Cook claims the breakthrough battery life and 2-in-1 camera system on the iPhone 16e are two of many reasons why users enjoy the new iPhone lineup so much.

Contrary to Cook’s claims, Apple expert Mark Gurman posted on X (Twitter), suggesting that a large portion of iPhone sales were made out of fear of the device becoming unavailable due to Trump’s tariffs.

Cook also addressed these tariffs in the call, claiming that Apple had lost US$800 million (approximately C$1.1 billion) in the quarter due to the tariff. He estimated that this amount would rise to US$1.1 billion (nearly C$1.5 billion) in the next quarter ending in September.

Along with announcements regarding the performance of the iPhone, Cook also announced Apple’s growing investments in AI. Apple did not name any specific company they potentially wanted to purchase, only stating that an attempt to boost its AI efforts was a possibility.
