During Meta’s Q2 earnings call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg told the company’s investors that he believes people without AI glasses will be at a “disadvantage.”
“I continue to think that glasses are basically going to be the ideal form factor for AI, because you can let an AI see what you see throughout the day, hear what you hear, [and] talk to you,” Zuckerberg said during the earnings call, as reported by TechCrunch. He continues, mentioning that glasses with displays will allow users to experience a wider, holographic field of view, such as Meta’s upcoming, next-gen Orion AR glasses.
“I think in the future, if you don’t have glasses that have AI — or some way to interact with AI — I think you’re … probably [going to] be at a pretty significant cognitive disadvantage compared to other people,” Zuckerberg said.
Meta has been working on smart glasses for a while. The company is rumoured to have several new smart glasses in the works, and it recently announced the first generation of Oakley Meta glasses. With these glasses, people can listen to music, take photos and videos, and ask Meta AI questions.
Zuckerberg also seems to have faith in the Metaverse still. “The other thing that’s awesome about glasses is they are going to be the ideal way to blend the physical and digital worlds together,” he said. “So the whole Metaverse vision, I think, is going to … end up being extremely important, too, and AI is going to accelerate that.”
However, as someone who uses the Ray-Ban Metas every day, I don’t feel like I have an advantage, but maybe that’ll change when my next smart glasses have a display.
