In its latest update, Instagram is introducing many new features inspired by competitor platforms.
Users can now repost reels and grid posts from other accounts with a similar feel to TikTok. These reposts will be displayed on new repost tab on your profile and in the feeds of the people who follow you. This new feature has made it much easier for somebody to share a post, as previously, trying to repost a reel or a post would require posting to a user’s story.
Along with the new repost feature, Instagram is also introducing an opt-in location map that will be accessible from your private messages. This map will show the last active location of friends who opt in and pull content from specific locations where many people may be posting, similar to Snapchat and its Snap Maps.
This new platform update also includes an update to one of the app’s existing features, showing users what reels their friends have interacted with. When initially introduced, this feature sparked a lot of concern about the inability to opt out of having your activity broadcast to everyone who follows you. This update addresses those concerns, giving users a lot more control, allowing them to control what likes or reposts get displayed and the ability to mute other people’s interactions if they don’t interest them.
These kinds of updates to the platform reinforce the issue that many Instagram users now have about the platform and its identity. Many believe it has strayed from its original function and is now trying to compete with TikTok by shifting focus to Reels content.
