If you love your iPad and Instagram, then today will be a big day for you because the social media platform finally has an iPad app.
After taking it for a quick spin, it doesn’t feel like a massive revolution over the existing web app I had on my iPad, but I will say there seem to be smoother animations. That said, due to Instagram being a TikTok clone now, it defaults to Reels when you open it. You need to select the icon with the overlapping people to see posts from people you follow.
Overall, this is newsworthy because it was so weird that Instagram never had an iPad app back in the day, but now that it’s here, it’s incredibly underwhelming. That being said, the iPad version does support iOS 26’s enhanced windowing and Apple Pencil, so some work was put into ensuring it took advantage of some of the iPad’s perks.
I like to believe that maybe the company is moving into the iPad space to make it easier for people to edit complex Reels, but considering that there isn’t even an iPad version of the Instagram Edits app, I wouldn’t hold my breath for that.
Finally, this app is only supported on iPads that can run iPadOS 15 or newer, which should make it available on most modern iPads.
