It turns out that people are really excited for Hollow Knight: Silksong.
The Team Cherry-developed Metroidvania game officially launched at 10 a.m. ET across consoles and PCs worldwide, but people quickly turned to social media to report that Steam, the Xbox Store and Nintendo eShop were all inaccessible at that time. “We are unable to process your request. Please try again later,” reads a common error message on Steam.
Other people, meanwhile, like Game File editor Stephen Totillo, report being able to access the eShop, but it was glitching out as they were searching for Silksong. On the flip side, The Verge‘s Tom Warren reports that Xbox Game Pass members can work around the Xbox outages by heading to the Xbox website and remotely installing the game to their console.
Interestingly, the PlayStation Store has (so far at the time of writing) appeared to be fine, but seemingly only because Silksong still only has the “Add to Wishlist” option instead of one to purchase and download. All of this is to say, you might want to give every gaming marketplace some patience today as they go through the Silksong launch.
Overall, it’s fascinating to see such high demand for an indie game, a level of mass excitement that is generally reserved for big-budget “AAA” games like Grand Theft Auto VI. A big part of this is no doubt due to the eight-year gap between Silksong and its predecessor, simply called Hollow Knight. This has led to a subculture of gaming fans actively calling to see Silksong at every presentation, like Nintendo Directs or The Game Awards. And when we finally got the September 4 release date in August, several games were actually pushed back in response.
