Rogers begins to build out HSPA+ wireless network

rogers-network-phasesIt was not that long ago, actually at the Canadian Telecom Summit on June 15th that Nadir Mohamed, Rogers President and CEO of Rogers, said “To me we are now entering the sweet spot of HSPA deployment 7.2”.

However, today is a new story as Rogers has announced “it has begun the Canada-wide deployment of a 21 Megabits per second (Mbps) high-speed HSPA+ (High Speed Packet Access Plus) wireless network, following the successful expansion and doubling of speed of its high-speed network to 7.2 Mbps last year.”

The official built-out will start in August, first in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) and expand “quickly” over several months to other Canadian cities. Huge news and those are blazing fast speeds! Rogers also stated they will be the first wireless provider in North America and only the sixth carrier in the world to launch a HSPA+ network.

Rob Bruce, President, Rogers Wireless said “With the exponential growth of smartphones, application stores, mobile
Internet sticks and embedded laptops and netbooks, Canadians are embracing wireless data and services like never before. The super-charged data speeds achieved with Rogers’ 21 Mbps upgrade will enable us to support more customers with the most innovative mobile services well into the future, while our customers will experience mobile broadband at speeds like what they experience at home and at work.”

The press release also stated “The 21 Mbps network capability will be complemented with the launch of a 21 Mbps capable Mobile Internet stick in the same timeframe”. We have also confirmed with Rogers that there are no current products on the market now that can handle 21 Mbps and the Internet stick will be the launched first. Plus the announcement refers just to Rogers customers, not Fido customers.
