Rogers has released their Q2 2009 numbers and they continue to bring in the wireless revenue. Another 3 months of this so-called recession was nowhere in sight for them as they increased wireless revenue by 6% from last year to over $1.5 billion, and increased their subscriber base by 148,000.

Those are impressive numbers, but what is even more astonishing is the amount of Smartphones they activated. In the report it states “Wireless activated more than 315,000 smartphone devices, predominantly iPhone 3G, BlackBerry and Android devices, during the quarter. Approximately half of these activations were to subscribers new to Wireless with the other half being to existing Wireless subscribers who upgraded devices, committed to new term contracts, and in most cases attached both voice and monthly data packages”.

With 315,000 smartphone activation you know the data revenue had to increase significantly. How much? Well, according to Rogers, data makes up a whopping 20% of their revenue and increased in this quarter by 38%. Still no word on exact iPhone 3GS numbers (we are hearing around 30,000), but in the “Forward Looking Statement” section is says “we note that Wireless recently launched the iPhone 3G S, for which sales volumes in the second half of 2009 cannot be accurately estimated”.

Nadir Mohamed, President and Chief Executive Officer said “…we were successful during the second quarter in reducing costs, returning increasing amounts of cash to shareholders and further enhancing the quality of our balance sheet. Most importantly, at the same time we have continued to invest in key growth areas and deliver innovative products and increased value to customers.”
