CAA says that Texting while driving “is only going to get worse”

Many Canadian provinces have banned the use of hand held devices while driving. If you;re caught talking, texting, emailing or basically using your device without a Bluetooth headset of sorts then you could be heavily fined, possibly have your licence suspended. A recent survey of 6,000 people by the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) shows that 88% of people said text messaging while driving is a “very serious” safety threat and the biggest safety concern. Impaired driving came in at 83%. Other findings of the survey have talking on cellphones at 65%.

CAA spokesman Ian Jack said “It signals a sea shift for people. It’s part of Canadian culture now that, for almost everyone, you don’t get impaired and get behind the wheel of a car. The message hasn’t sunk in yet that it’s a really bad idea to be looking at your wireless device while driving. We’re dealing right now with a generation of teenagers who seem to have their wireless devices stapled to their hands, 24/7. Older drivers don’t have that habit and a lot of people who are about to get their driver’s licence do have that habit of constantly texting. The problem is only going to get worse.”
