iPhone 5 owners complaining of screen issues when swiping diagonally

iPhone 5 users are finding another thing to complain about, as evidence of a potential screen issue comes to light.

According to game developers CMA Megacorp, swiping in quick succession diagonally on the screen renders the input null. In other words, the iPhone 5 no longer detects any touches on the screen and fails to fails to respond in kind. While the problem is not present on every iPhone 5, proverbial fingers are pointing to the new in-cell technology used to fuse the digitizer to the screen, as there is no evidence the issue exists on previous versions of the iPhone.

I’ve verified the issue exists on my iPhone 5, though it seems to happen sporadically: at times the screen responds perfectly, while in other situations no input is registered at all. Fifth generation iPod Touch users are also reporting the same problem, narrowing the issue to the new 4-inch Retina display and not necessarily software, as it was first thought to be.

Outside of rare cases, most users will never experience the problem in traditional apps. Games, however, stand to be tragically affected by the problem, as there are many hack-and-slash games that require constant and repeated diagonal slashes across the screen.

It will be interesting to see if and how Apple responds to this issue, which is threatening to become another “gate” after “Mapgate” swept the world earlier this year.

We’ve embedded a video of the issue after the break.
