Photo editor Snapseed arrives on Android, goes free on iOS

When Google acquired Nik Software, creators of Mac and iOS photo editing software Snapseed, it became inevitable that the company would release an Android version of its popular app. Today that has happened, as Snapseed for Android is a reality, available for phones and tablets running Ice Cream Sandwich or above.

While this does limit the user base, Google is pushing people stuck on Android 2.2 and 2.3 to update their phones, or to purchase a Nexus device that will always stay updated. The software is very easy to use, and less onerous or labour-intensive than Photoshop Touch. It can aut0-fix photos, definitely, but it can be used to make subtle and even minute edits to photos that affect exposure, saturation, sharpness and contrast. In other words, it’s a fully-fledged photo editor that competes with iPhoto.

The iOS version, which previously cost $4.99, has also been updated with a few new filters and effects, and has now gone free as well. The app, on both platforms, can be used as an Instagram alternative, and ties into the company’s Google+ social network quite closely, especially on Android. This allows users to automatically upload edited photos to Google+ and share them to their Circles or the newly-launched Communities, which replaces Google Groups and message boards.

Snapseed for Android is now available, while the update to iOS is live and the price has been reduced to nothing.
