Stuff We Like: Cygnett ICON iPhone 5 Cases [Holiday 2012]

There is nothing better than adorning your mobile device with something that makes it truly unique, and uniquely yours. Cygnett is an accessory maker we’ve been fans of for a long time, covering them at CES 2012 and admiring long before.

The Australian company takes pride in collaborating with artists in a special edition category called ICON. They started with one person, Nathan Jurevicius, for the iPhone 4S and have now expanded to three artists and multiple unique designs for the iPhone 5.

The cases are well-constructed, providing the right compromise between bulk and protection. The material is a high-grade polycarbonate that doesn’t easily scratch, and I’ve dropped my iPhone 5 several times with the case on with no visible damage to either the phone or the case.

With a clear coating of matte paint, all the ICON cases feel as great in the hand as they are solid and protective. But the biggest draw to me are the stories behind each case. From Australia, Cyngett has collaborated with Scarygirl graphic novel creator, Nathan Jurevicius, whose depictions of childhood terror and frustration are rendered beautifully on the cases. From Brooklyn, Cygnett has teamed up with famous muralists TATS CRU to draw a gorgeous representation of lived-in New York.

The cases are relatively inexpensive at $29.99, are more robust than the average rubber slip case, and infinitely more unique. We like all of Cygnett’s products, but the ICON really speaks to us.
