As expected, this year was all about smartphones and tablets. Flurry Analytics, whose data we’ve covered in the past, claims that based on its numbers (which cover approximately 90% of all iOS and Android devices) there was a 332% jump in device activations on Christmas day over the December average.
According to the company’s report, 17.4 million iOS and Android devices were activated on Christmas day, nearly 3.5 times more than the four million on a regular day in December. Indeed, the number was also 2.5 times greater than Christmas day in 2011, where 6.8 million devices were activated.
In other words, there were a lot of smartphones and tablets under the tree this Christmas. More importantly, it looks like tablets, including the iPad, Kindle Fire and Nexus 7, were the main prizes this holiday season; tablet activations equaled smartphones for the first time ever.
App downloads were also up over 100% compared to the December average. Yes, these are all expected results, but the sheer increase in volume points to increased app revenue for both camps in the months ahead.
