Microsoft: 75,000 Windows Phone apps were published in 2012

App dominance has been a selling point for the various manufacturers for the last several years. Apple’s App Store, Google Play (Android), RIM’s BlackBerry App World (soon to be just BlackBerry World) and Microsoft’s Windows Phone Marketplace have been battling it out over the schere number of apps, when really customers just want quality apps.

Today on the Microsoft blog, Todd Brix, Senior Director of Windows Phone Apps Team, stated that while they “set a new foundation this year” with Windows Phone 8 they saw their customers base download more apps then when Windows 7 was released 2-years ago, with an average of 54 apps per customer. There has also been 300,000 app updates and over 75,000 new apps and games published into the Windows Phone Marketplace, which is apparently “more than doubling the catalog size” over last year.

This year we saw a slew of new Windows Phone 8 devices launch in Canada, namely the Nokia Lumia 920, HTC 8X and 8S, plus the Samsung ATIV S. There’s no word yet on the device lineup for 2013, but there will be some announcements from several manufactures at CES in a couple weeks.
