The next Angry Birds game is launching on iOS on March 17th

If cats rule the Internet (and they do), then birds rule mobile gaming. From the recent Flappy Bird craze to the grandaddy that started it all, Angry Birds, mobile gamers can’t get enough of cartoon bird violence.

Rovio, the developer of Angry Birds, has announced a new addition to the Angry family, Angry Birds Epic. But unlike the Scorched Earth-inspired arial death contest of the original, Angry Birds Epic will be a – wait for it – adventure role-playing game (ARPG for my friends in the know) with turn-based combat. The game will also feature a story-driven campaign and extensive crafting system, allowing players to make items using resources won in the game or via in-app payments (sigh).

Obviously, Rovio’s announcement is surprising, but the developer should be commended for taking a chance on a more complex game type with a brand built for its mass appeal.

One final item of note: Rovio is soft launching an early version of Angry Birds Epic for iOS in Canada and Australia later this week. A finished version of the game will launch globally across Android and Windows Phone later this year. Leave a comment and let us know if you’ll be giving the game a try.

Update: Rovio has announced the soft launch of Angry Bird Epic will begin March 17th, available in Canada, Australia and New Zealand on iOS. The free-to-play game will feature many of the same characters as the other games, but re-imagined in a combat role. And there will be many in-app purchases.
