Rogers and Shaw announce shomi, its $8.99/month Netflix competitor

Rogers and Shaw, as expected, have announced a new subscription video-on-demand service called shomi.

Shomi will be available in beta for Roger and Shaw internet or cable customers, and will be available as an app on iOS, Android, web, Xbox 360 and set top boxes starting the first week of November. Shomi will be $8.99 per month which, probably not coincidentally is the same pricing as Netflix.

Rogers notes that “shomi was created for entertainment lovers by entertainment lovers” and differs by exclusive content that is purportedly better and newer than what is found on Netflix. There will be over 14,000 available episodes and titles to stream at launch, including 1,200 movies and 340 TV shows. (Rogers does point out that 30% of content is Canadian.) Some of the rights that showmi brings to the table are past seasons of Modern Family, Sons of Anarchy, Sleepy Hollow, Shameless, 2 Broke Girls, Vikings, New Girl, 24: Live Another Day, Chicago Fire, The Strain, and American Horror Story.

Probably to work around any issues with the CRTC, shomi is a joint venture owned equally by Rogers and Shaw and will operate independently of both companies.

Keith Pelley, President, Rogers Media, said, “We’ve taken the time to talk with Canadians to find out what they want and to create an unbelievable user experience. They told us loud and clear – they want all the past seasons of the most popular, current TV shows and they want it to be easy. shomi takes the guesswork out of finding what to watch, acting like a new-age video clerk serving up all the best content based on individual viewing habits.”

Look for a hands-on of shomi later in the day.
