Kobo Aura H2O Waterproof ereader now available at Best Buy, Future Shop, Indigo

If you’re currently coordinating with an Amerifriend about the best way to obtain Amazon’s new Kindle Voyage, let this post serve as a reminder that Kobo’s got a new ereader launching today, and you can buy this one without hassling anyone south of the border.

The Kobo Aura H2O was announced back in August and is a 6.8-inch water-resistant ereader. The device is priced at $179 and launches today in Canada and the United States on Kobo.com and in-store at Indigo, Best Buy, and Future Shop.

The Aura H2O is based on a 1 GHz processor and packs 4 GB of storage, and supports up to 32 GB via microSD expansion. The device features 10 fonts in 24 sizes, as well as a dictionary and support for notes, highlighting, and bookmarks.

Of course, the stand-out feature here is the waterproofing that allows users to immerse the device in water depths of up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. Don’t expect to be able to read anything while the device is underwater — the Aura H2O’s display warns that the device needs to be dried off as soon as it senses any serious amount of water. However, this can be turned off via the settings menu if you find a reason to use the device while it is immersed (snorkelling, perhaps?).

The Kobo Aura H2O is an extremely attractive option for those that love to read in the bath or by the pool. The fact that its IP67 rated means it’s also suitable for sandy beaches, a mortal enemy to most electronic devices.
