Google brings Songza to Play Music, adds playlists based on day, mood or activity

Google has rolled out an update to Play Music for iOS, Android and the web today, bringing a Material Design focus and initial Songza integration.

The company acquired Songza earlier this year for nearly $40 million, a bargain for a streaming music company that has quickly become a daily fixture in many music lovers’ lives.

Google Play Music integration mimics many of Songza’s core features, including choosing playlists based on time of day, weather, mood or activity. The playlist layer works with Play Music’s existing radio feature for free users, and on-demand listening for paid subscribers.

Play Music - new recommendations - Web

The Listen Now section of Play Music has been revamped with a Material Design aesthetic, and to showcase new artists, albums, genres and playlists. This new view will be available on mobile and the web, and allows one-touch creation of radio stations based on all the above metrics.

Playlists, both curated and automatically generated, can be saved for offline playback as well.

The update are rolling out slowly to Google Play, and should be available today on the App Store.
