Shazam buddies up with geolocation beacon company Gimbal Inc

A little over six months ago, Qualcomm announce plans to spin off its geolocation beacon technology into a separate company called Gimbal Inc. Now, Gimbal is partnering with Shazam to expand the functionality of its app and increase user engagement.

Gimbal’s beacons became commercially available in December of 2013 and work in tandem with the Gimbal platform to enable stores to send discounts and contextually relevant content to shoppers.

Today’s announcement will see the Gimbal SDK, which allows developers to connect their apps to Gimbal beacons, incorporated into Shazam. Presumably that means song and artist recommendations based on your location.

Gimbal’s beacons use Bluetooth Low Energy and are supposedly accurate down to one foot.
