Carl’s Jr. launches mobile payment and rewards app in Canada

Carl’s Jr., whose claim to fame is its “big, juicy California-style burgers,” only has 16 locations across Canada, far fewer than McDonalds or Wendy’s, but the American fast food chain is banking on a recently launched app to keep customers coming back.

Vancouver-based PayWith has partnered with Carl’s Jr. to become the first burger joint in Canada to enable mobile payments, gifting and rewards within its app, available to iPhone and Android users. The app is currently only usable at four Ontario locations — Waterloo, Guelph, and the two in Toronto — but it will expand to additional areas in the next few months.

In order to use the app and pay from a device, users must first connect their contact details and credit card info (Visa, Mastercard, AMEX, or debit cards), then take the device to the payment terminal. The company also notes that anyone who downloads the app will score $10 in initial credit. In addition, users can also earn various rewards based on the amount they spend, and there’s also the option of sending a gift card to a buddy.

The app will eventually be “integrated into Apple Pay and Android Pay,” allowing customers to tap their phone and purchase items and earn rewards, which the company says is expected to launch in Canada later this year.
