Syncing bug caused some SwiftKey users to see leaked emails

SwiftKey

SwiftKey has built its reputation on accurate and personalized autocomplete suggestions, so when the popular keyboard app started coming up with strange suggestions last week, its users were more than a bit miffed.

What turned out to be a bug became frequent enough that entire Reddit threads popped up with users documenting the weird autocomplete suggestions their keyboard populated. One SwiftKey user, for instance, said their keyboard began offering up links to porn sites, while another wrote their app got a sudden penchant for German words. In a couple of cases, some users even saw emails they hadn’t seen before.

In a statment issued on its blog, SwiftKey says the issue cropped up due to a bug with the servers it has set up to handle syncing between multiple devices. Essentially, it looks like those servers were incorrectly syncing user profiles, letting some of the app’s users see sensitive information like emails.

For the time being, SwiftKey has disabled its syncing servers while it works on a proper fix. The company says it will publish more information on the bug in the future.
