Landing alongside the new Xbox One S, available tomorrow starting at $399, and Windows 10’s anniversary update, a major update has started rolling out to all Xbox One consoles.
Dubbed the 2016 Summer Update, the software upgrade adds a number of new features to Microsoft’s eighth generation console.
The most notable addition is the revamped Xbox Store. While not available just yet, in the coming weeks the new store will start to host universal Windows 10 apps such as VLC.
On the same front, the update adds the necessary hooks for the company’s Play Anywhere program. Announced back at E3 2016, games that are part of the Play Anywhere initiative can be played on both the Xbox One and PC, with saves syncing across the two devices.
The update also adds back an favourite fan feature from the Xbox 360. Once a new update has been installed, Xbox One owners that want to listen to their own tunes while playing a game will no longer need to devote a third of their screen to do so. That’s because background music is finally back.
Moving on, in something of a home coming, the update also support for Cortana, Microsoft’s voice-activated personal assistant.
However, Canadians will have to wait to call upon the personal assistant; as it did with the launch of Windows 10, Microsoft is rolling out support for Cortana in only a few markets. For the time being, only Xbox One users in the U.S. and U.K. can use the feature.
On the mobile front, Microsoft has released a new Xbox app on iOS and Android. Similar to the previous Smartglass app, the new Xbox app allows users to check out their achievements, games and friend list on their mobile device.
