TTC delays launch of app that allows passengers to report harassment

TTC harassment app

The TTC recently delayed the release of its long awaited abuse-reporting app, Safe TTC, for unknown reasons.

When the TTC revealed it was working on the app, the agency planned to release it by the end of 2016, or in early 2017. However, a representative from the TTC recently revealed that the app will no longer follow this timeline, but will rather be released this coming fall.

When asked by the Toronto Star about the delay, the representative stated that the TTC is doing “extensive testing and training … to ensure that proper standard operating procedures are in place when the app is released.”

The app is a product developed by the Massachusetts based company, Elerts, whose products are used by transit companies across multiple cities. According to statistics, 85 sexual assaults reported to the TTC last year, and 12 in the first two months of 2017. In addition, The Star reports that police received 577 reports of sexual assault on TTC property or vehicles between 2011 and 2015.
