The Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and Drive Hockey have partnered to introduce ‘Smart Arena Technology’ at the inaugural Connor McDavid OHL Top Prospects Game.
The Smart Arena Technology uses sensors placed on the players and rinks along with AI to provide in-depth analytics on all the players within minutes of the game’s conclusion.
The Connor McDavid OHL Top Prospects Game shows off NHL draft-eligible players to scouts to get a better look at them against other top-tier talent. The data provided by Drive Hockey will give scouts more underlying data and statistics to add to their player profile.
According to the OHL, the Smart Arena Technology will perform similarly to NHL Edge, the NHL’s analytics system to track player data. According to Drive Technology’s website, the Smart Arena Technology will reportedly produce 3,000 data points per second.
However, hockey isn’t the only sport that has taken a step forward in using analytics and tracking data to improve development and progression. Baseball, a sport known for being very statistics-heavy, has outlets and facilities like Driveline Baseball that use sensors and software to help improve hitting and pitching mechanics for players at all levels of baseball.
The OHL states that integrating Drive’s technology with the event is a step forward in integrating this level of player-analysis tech at the junior hockey level. According to the press release, the Smart Arena Technology ensures teams can handle the modern game.
