SMART Technologies, the company behind the popular SMART Boards in classrooms and boardrooms, is coming out with a smaller version of its product to try and reach new customers.
The new SMART Board Mini has a 27-inch screen and the well-regarded digital ink/marker tech that the company is known for. It also has a high-end webcam and speakers. The Mini can connect to a computer with a single USB-C cable and has a few other hidden features that help it work in conjunction with a full-sized SMART Board.
The company has also designed this model to fit a small form factor Windows PC or ChromeOS device on the back so it can be an all-in-one unit if need be.
In a briefing about the product, the company suggested that the best use case for the SMART Board Mini would be to present in conjunction with a large SMART Board. In this instance, you could use the smaller display on your podium to work off of, and then all the changes and drawings you make will be reflected on the full-sized smart board the full room can see. You can also make these changes without turning your back on your audience, which is something some presenters value a lot.
Pre-orders for the display go live on March 1, but so far, the company hasn’t given a price. When asked if they saw this as a consumer product like a regular desktop monitor, the team at Smart said it could be, but they don’t see many people using it that way, suggesting to me that it will be pretty expensive.
