OpenAI has announced a new rebrand, touching up its bloom logo while also introducing a new typeface known as OpenAI Sans, a new colour palette, and a new wallpaper.
In an interview with Wallpaper.com, designers Veit Moeller and Shannon Jager discussed how the previous design felt ‘haphazard’ and lacked a true identity. According to the interview, the two were tasked with creating a visual identity that was ‘more organic and more human (kind of ironic considering what OpenAi does) without losing the sense of authority, technological sophistication and research-focused underpinnings.’
The new wallpapers consist of the newer fonts alongside some commissioned photography to provide the more organic and human feel touched upon in the interview. Some examples of works that Wallpaper.com used are for services like Sora or for OpenAi in general.
According to the interview, OpenAI Sans is a bespoke sans serif typeface that aims to combine all of OpenAI’s different typefaces into one clean, consistent font. The designers say they want to expand the typeface to many different languages.
They also show off the ‘Emotive Point’ they have debuted. Instead of a simple motion file, it is programmed and can respond to inputs. Moeller calls it ” a design device that people will use when interacting with AI” while referring to it as ‘non-human.’ Moeller also describes it as Chat GPT’s ‘voice.’
The only problem with this redesign is that it doesn’t add much in terms of creativity. While it looks aesthetically pleasing, it doesn’t look much different from what it was before. Similarly, PayPal recently underwent a rebrand that left critics with mixed emotions.
One thing I can give OpenAI credit for is they know who they are and didn’t go too off the wall. Looking at you, Jaguar.
