Apple is finally rolling its streaming service out to the rest of the world with a new Android version of the Apple TV app.
This version of the app is available on Android phones and will replace the existing version on Google TV. Apple says that this version has been built from the ground up to be Android native and even works with Google Play Billing, so you can easily subscribe to the service right from your Android device.
The Apple TV app is already on Android TV devices, but this new update, which is supported on devices running at least Android 10, will allow you to subscribe to Apple TV+ and MLS Season Pass right from the Play Store. It costs the same on Android as on Apple products, and new subscribers can access a seven-day free trial.
The app isn’t the same as the iOS and Apple TV versions. It doesn’t have access to the iTunes store, so users can’t buy or rent movies. On top of that, at least on mobile, there is no way to access your previously purchased media either. You also can’t cast or use AirPlay in the app, but Apple is working to bring some form of casting in the future.
At the end of the day, this means that Apple TV+ is finally available on all devices, so it might help the company pick up a few more subscriptions now that it’s picking up steam with hit shows like Severance and Silo. It was already on all major smart TV platforms, but you needed to sign up for the service via the Apple TV+ website or with an Apple device. It seems like Apple hopes that if it makes it easier for people to sign up for the service, it might convince more Android users to try it out. That said, when you buy an Apple TV, iPhone, Mac or iPad, you get a three-month free trial, so it will be interesting to see if the seven-day trial for Android users hooks people similarly.
As of the time of writing, the app isn’t live on the Canadian Play Store, but it should be available at some point later today.
