Hotline Doug: Ford asks people to stop sending nighttime texts

During his press conference the premier let it slip that his phone is keeping him up at night, and he's not even doomscrolling

During Doug Ford’s press conference this afternoon, he shared that the Ontario government is taking various actions to help fight the U.S. tariffs.

However, as a nerd, one thing stood out to me, and that was Doug Ford’s story about how he only gets around four hours of crappy sleep each night because his phone is constantly buzzing on the nightstand as the trade war escalates.

Doug, buddy, that can’t be good for you.

As a human being, I know that living off four hours of sleep is a recipe for disaster, and with all the external pressure going on, I think Ontarians would be happy to make sure our leader is getting enough shut-eye.

So, Doug, as Canada’s tech support wiz, I’ve written you a guide for how to make your phone buzz less at night. I hope you enjoy it. I really hope you’re not still using a BlackBerry, or this isn’t going to work.

How to silence your phone at night to get more sleep

You can do a few things with your phone to make it stop buzzing, but setting up a custom ‘Do Not Disturb’ filter sounds most beneficial to you.

This will turn on automatically during the night, and you can choose who will make your phone buzz, and who will get silenced during that window of time. And don’t worry, you can still see your notifications, but the less important ones won’t buzz anymore. It looks like Doug uses an iPhone, so the below steps are for iOS, but you can do a similar setup on Android too.

  1. Open the settings app.
  2. Scroll down to the ‘Focus’ category.
  3. Choose ‘Do Not Disturb.’
  4. Tap on where it says ‘People.’
  5. Add your close family and important contacts to this list.
  6. Change the ‘Allow Phone Calls From’ section from ‘Everybody’ to ‘Allowed People Only.’
  7. Go back to the ‘Do Not Disturb’ screen.
  8. Scroll down and set a schedule.
  9. Choose one based on time (since you’re busy, I’d recommend setting it from like 1am to 6am to give you an extra hour of sleep).

And that’s it. Now, you shouldn’t get woken up by a vibrating phone every night!

FAQs

When this is enabled, you can still see your notifications by swiping down from the top left corner of your phone.

When Do Not Disturb is enabled, you will see a small crescent moon icon beside the clock in the top left of the screen.
