Cheaper ad-free YouTube Premium Lite not available in Canada

This plan lets you avoid ads, but doesn't have all the YouTube Premium perks

YouTube is testing a new cheaper $7.99 USD (roughly $11.45 CAD) plan to help more users get ad-free YouTube, but sadly it’s not available in Canada yet.

MobileSyrup has reached out to Google Canada for any Canadian information, but the YouTube press release mentions that in the coming weeks, this is rolling out as a pilot program in Thailand, Germany and Australia alongside the U.S.

Right now, Canada’s main YouTube Premium option costs $13.99, which is the same cost in the U.S., suggesting that if the $7.99 price tier does roll out to Canada it will also be priced at $7.99 here.

This cheaper option is called Premium Lite and removes ads from the service. However, it doesn’t include YouTube Music, YouTube video downloads or background playback.

Update 12:12 March 6, 2024: Google Canada says “We’ll look to expand to more markets based on user feedback and demand. We’ll have more to share soon in terms of timing and pricing.”
