Chrono Trigger is currently on sale on mobile in celebration of its 30th anniversary.
For a limited time, you can snag the legendary Square Enix RPG for $3.99 on Android and iOS, 70 percent off the regular price. This is the “Upgrade Version” of the classic SNES game, meaning it adds optimized mobile touchscreen controls, controller support and an “auto-mode” to streamline the turn-based battles. The Steam version of the game has also been discounted by 75 percent to $4.99 until March 20.
Originally released in Japan on March 11, 1995, Chrono Trigger is the iconic collaboration between legendary creators Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball), Yuji Horii (Dragon Quest) and Hironobu Sakaguchi (Final Fantasy). While Horii and the late Toriyama had previously collaborated on the Dragon Quest games at Japanese publisher Enix, the involvement of rival Square’s Sakaguchi was particularly notable at the time. (This would predate the merger of Square and Enix by several years.)
Chrono Trigger would go on to become regarded as one of the greatest games of all time for its masterful blend of engaging Final Fantasy–inspired turn-based combat, Toriyama’s character designs, an innovative time travel story conceived by Horii and, for the time, a groundbreaking assortment of different endings encouraging multiple playthroughs.
Square Enix’s official Japanese X (Twitter) account rang in the anniversary for the “timeless masterpiece that transcends generations.” It also teased that it will launch “various projects that go beyond the world of the game over the next year,” although it’s unclear what these will be.
A logical project would be either a port or remaster/remake of the game, especially since it’s not actually available on modern consoles. (The game is only on mobile and PC.) Square Enix’s popular ‘HD-2D’ visual style, which it used to remake the likes of Live A Live and Dragon Quest III, would also be a natural fit for Chrono Trigger.
